About us

Our mission

We aim to support the recovery and protection of whale populations by focusing on individual health indicators and habitat requirements.

Our vision

Many whale populations are still struggling to recover from decades of industrial whaling, and continue to face threats from entanglement in fishing gear, collisions with vessels, underwater noise, and climate change.

We believe that studying whales at an individual level is fundamental to understanding the requirements of a population, which can in turn support science-based conservation measures.

Our approach

We focus on building collaborations within the research community, designing scientific studies, conducting field research, disseminating findings, and supporting the conservation of whales and their habitats. Our efforts are focused on species for which fundamental biological and ecological data is lacking, thereby informing evidence-based threat mitigation and conservation measures.

Research  Platform

Most of our research is undertaken on the steel ketch sailboat Andromède, based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. This platform allows us to remain offshore for extended periods and travel long distances. As avid sailors, we aim to maximize our use of wind power and raise sails whenever possible. Using a sailboat greatly reduces our carbon footprint and minimizes acoustic disturbance to whales.
